Some Egyptian public and private schools annually conduct summer activities for their students. This year's summer activity at the 6th of October Comprehensive School for Basic Education was different. With the support of UNICEF, the Ministry of Education and Technical Education opened the doors of 500 public schools in 6 governorates (Cairo - Giza - Qalyubia - Alexandria - Damietta - Sharqia) to offer summer activities to Egyptians and non-Egyptians for the first time within the third phase of the Life Skills and Citizenship Education (LSCE) program.
This program aims to enhance children’s self-confidence, maintain their health, improve their future expectations, and create an inclusive, supportive, and safe environment for children of different nationalities. This is done by providing children with a set of skills that allows them to learn, be empowered, coexist, work, and become positive citizens in the future. The program discusses 7 essential topics throughout the year in schools, and as a complementary activity to what was implemented during the school year, UNICEF designed the “One Day Activity” model, where children come to school for one day during summer vacation to practice many activities that combine play and learning. UNICEF trained more than 2,500 teachers in these schools to implement life skills sessions and promote the concepts of citizenship, coexistence, tolerance, and self-management through activities.
This project is supported by PROSPECTS programme – a partnership between the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), International Labour Organization (ILO), the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and UNICEF.
