In a bustling classroom in Cairo, 30 excited students gathered on a warm day to embark on a non-traditional learning journey. Their aim was to address climate change, a pressing issue that not only presents a global challenge but also disproportionately impacts children.
Through UNICEF's "Learning through Play" programme, LEGOs are integrated into the school curriculum to give a hands-on approach for exploring the complexities of climate change. This initiative not only informs children about the consequences of climate change but also encourages them to creatively express their concerns and provide solutions.
At the beginning of the academic school year. UNICEF procured thousands of LEGO blocks for educational purposes to schools participating in the "Education through play" programme. Over 5,000 teachers in nine different governorates were trained by UNICEF on how to use LEGO to teach different subjects.
In this class at Haya School, all 30 students demonstrated their take on the climate crisis using LEGO blocks. It’s time to put children at the forefront and listen to what they have to say about climate change.
It is necessary to continue to provide every child with the developmental opportunities and skills needed through climate education, so children can continue to be empowered champions for the environment and stay at the forefront of the climate conversation.
