Transforming Education in Africa
Making quality education a reality for every child
Every child has the right to an education.
And over the past two decades, Africa has improved children's access to education thanks to commitment and action by the continent's leadership.
While progress has been promising, challenges remain. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 9 out of 10 children cannot read and understand a simple text by age 10.
By 2050, Africa will be home to 1 billion children and adolescents.
They cannot be left behind. They urgently need quality education, adequate skills and opportunities.
A high-level event on transforming education in Africa
On 20 September 2022, the African Union, UNICEF and partners convened a high-level side event on transforming education in Africa to provide space for Heads of States, development partners and young people to come together to galvanize actions for speed and scale in transforming education systems in Africa.
The time to act is now!
We must tackle the learning crisis through increased investment in foundational learning. If Africa’s children are equipped with solid numeracy and literacy proficiencies, they will be better positioned to obtain higher-level knowledge and skills in the future.
Transforming education in Africa is everybody’s business. The education sector alone cannot address the magnitude of the challenges. The contributions of other sectors are needed. All are part of the solution.
This [Youth] Manifesto also acts as an instrument for intergenerational dialogue, as young people call for action to build education systems that provide everyone with critical skills and competencies to thrive in the future.
Education is a right, not a privilege. We need to translate commitment into action and this is what we hope to see here.
This is the time that we no longer see education as a business, but as a human right; inclusive of gender equality, non-discrimination, and as a safe platform for all.
