UNICEF Azerbaijan at COP28
Engaging youth and promoting climate resilience
Today, during a side event at COP28, we had an important talk about the "Impact of Climate Change on Children and Youth: Building Resilience Through National Adaptation Plans."
We discussed how climate change affects young people and stressed the need to adapt national climate policies to their needs. Our talks highlighted the power of education in empowering youth and encouraging their active role in decision-making.
The event also showcased Azerbaijan's commitment to tackling climate change, focusing on both mitigation and adaptation efforts.
Loss and Damage
UNICEF Azerbaijan, in collaboration with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, organized an event on “Loose and Damage: Linking Social Protection and Climate Resilience in Azerbaijan”.
The event provided insights into the growing global interest in leveraging existing national social protection systems to respond to climate-induced hazards swiftly and efficiently.
In Azerbaijan, 1 in 2 children live in high-risk areas exposed to climate shocks.
Climate change will have dire consequences on the wellbeing of children everywhere, including in middle-income countries.
Social protection, including cash transfer programmes, can play an important role in helping families and caregivers to prepare for, cope with, and recover from shocks and stresses and manage associated loss and damage.
The experts and government officials together explored how social protection such as cash transfer programs can support families in dealing with climate-related hazards and building resilience.
