Bucharest, 10 April 2024. The National Association for Special Educational Needs (nasen), in collaboration with UNICEF Romania, is proud to announce the launch of an Inclusive Education Toolkit explicitly designed for teachers in mainstream schools in Romania.

This aims to be an inspiring resource to support teachers in creating more inclusive classroom environments that cater to the needs of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Developed through comprehensive analysis and feedback of the teachers from 14 schools that were partners in the ‘Romania for every child’ initiative, the toolkit offers practical guidance, strategies, and tools to promote inclusive education. It emphasizes the importance of collaborative work, not only within schools but also with parents, families, and external agencies, to meet the diverse needs of all learners.

Highlighting a philosophy that values and respects every learner's uniqueness, the toolkit is informed by the latest research, international practices, and local experiences of teachers from Romania that are working with SEND children in mainstream schools. It encourages all educators to reflect on and adapt their teaching methods to ensure every student feels valued, supported, and celebrated.

Key features of the toolkit include:

  • Insights into recent theories on school inclusion for children with SEND.
  • Practical guidance for teachers on fostering an inclusive classroom environment.
  • A curated list of innovative tools to support the inclusion of children with SEND.
  • A dedicated module on working collaboratively with families of children with SEND.

Talking about the collaboration, Annamarie Hassall MBE, Chief Executive of nasen said: “We were honoured to work on such a collaboration with UNICEF Romania. Commitment for inclusive education starts with modelling inclusive practice in the classroom, and seeking ways to ensure that other teachers and the wider school community gradually become aware of what changes you are making to the way you teach”.

“All children, regardless of ability, have the right to inclusive quality education. In this respect, the tools that help teachers tailor their teaching to the needs of each child are essential. UNICEF reaffirms its commitment to inclusive education for all and thanks its partners and all teachers who work tirelessly to ensure children with special educational needs and disabilities learn together with their peers every day in school”, said Anna Riatti, UNICEF Representative in Romania.
