Every parent wants to give their children the best start in life. We know that the early years have a lasting impact on children's development. That's why we do our best to provide them with healthcare, education, and a safe and supportive environment.

But not all children have the same opportunities. In Malaysia, there are children who are not in school, who go hungry, who are exposed to violence, and who suffer from health struggles. There children are left behind because of their disability, lack of documentation, location, or poverty.

UNICEF believes that every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. We believe an independent Children's Commission will help us achieve that goal

The Children's Commission should be an independent body that would advocate for the rights of children and monitor the implementation of laws and policies that affect them. It should also provide a platform for children to be heard and to participate in decisions that affect their lives. In the UK, commission’s key function has been described as “translating children's experiences, perspectives and concerns into policy change”.

The establishment of an independent Children's Commission would be a significant step forward for Malaysia in its commitment to fulfilling the rights of children, in line with the country’s ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It would also be a good investment in the future of the country.

We urge the government to pass the Children's Commission of Malaysia Bill and to ensure that the Commission is adequately resourced to carry out its important work. Across the world, UNICEF has worked with governments to establish independent Children’s Commission. In Malaysia, we stand ready to support the government in their efforts to do the same.

Together, we can give every child in Malaysia the best start in life.
