UNICEF at the International Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) Summit 2022
5-9 December 2022
The International SBCC Summit will take place from December 5th to December 9th in Marrakech, Morocco. The Summit, the largest convening of its kind, will bring the Social and Behavior Change community of practice together to advance Social Behavior Change and accelerate progress across the SDGs. It is a great opportunity to learn and share about emerging innovations in the field and expand connections between Social Behavior Change organizations, practitioners, and scholars; acquire new skills and discuss new evidence and methodologies; address challenges facing the Social Behavior Change community and set global policy and programmatic agendas for the field. For UNICEF it is also an opportunity to showcase the outstanding work done by our offices, and network to strengthen partnerships and identify funding opportunities.
The Summit gathers around 2000 participants from every region including technical experts and policymakers in SBCC and representatives from donors, institutional partners, academics, NGOs, civil society organizations, International Organizations, and the private sector.

Themes
The Summit revolves around three themes this year:
- Catalyzing Transformational Change around some of the world’s most pressing challenges including poverty, gender equality, protecting the planet, and ensuring that all people enjoy health, peace, and prosperity
- Future Forward. To learn from programs and research that reveal new challenges, innovations, and methodologies that advance the field
- Connecting the Dots between diverse partners, across development sectors and disciplines, to create collective action and impact at various levels from individuals to whole societies
UNICEF @ the SBCC Summit
91 abstracts submitted by or with UNICEF staff members have been accepted and will translate into UNICEF-led sessions and presentations.
Overall, we are expecting a delegation of around 175 colleagues from all over the world to attend the Summit in person. We are also organizing side events (including on the shift to SBC, our role in humanitarian action, partnerships with the private sector and faith, etc.) and Exhibition Booths to facilitate interaction with participants.
All attending staff will help contribute to knowledge building within UNICEF by capturing and sharing the learnings and helping to identify key insights or proposed actions for the organization – we are coordinating the delegation around that.

Skills-Building: addressing Ableism, Disabilities Stigma & Discrimination

Be one of the first to learn and apply evidence-based tools from the first ever SBC resource pack to address Ableism, Stigma and Discrimination Towards Children with Disabilities and Their Families. Estimates suggest that there are 1 billion people with disabilities in the world, 240 thousand children with disabilities and 80% live in developing countries. Let's work together toward removing attitudinal, physical, organizational and communication barriers to build an inclusive society for all. The workshop will give you a brief overview of what disability is and share effective tools and strategy to collaborate with persons with disabilities, families, communities, service providers and policymakers to address stigma and discrimination and support inclusion with the aim of supporting effective development and implementation of behaviour and social change interventions.
Dialogue with UNICEF SBC Global Think Tank

The purpose of this side event is to bring together a diverse panel of technical experts across a broad spectrum of social, behavioural and political sciences. The panellists represent the Global SBC Think tank initiative and have been engaging a wide audience of the SBC community, as internal and external stakeholders, in exploring cross-cutting SBC global discourses and lessons-learned to inform systems strengthening and the community engagement dimensions of SBC programming. The goal of this initiative is to find innovative approaches to SBC strategic thinking and policy dialogues to strengthen SBC programing in development and humanitarian contexts. Think Tank (TT) members will be present to discuss the three key workstreams. As a part of a co-creation process, participants' perspectives and feedback will be solicited in an interactive process to review and discuss the Global TT outputs listed below:
- Systems Strengthening and Transformation through Social and Behaviour change: The Case of COVID-19 vaccination behaviour and lessons for Institutional leaders
- Making the Investment Case for Social & Behaviour Change (IC4SBC)
- Revisiting SBC Conceptual Frameworks and Case Studies from Afghanistan, Haiti, Malaysia, Somalia
Sharing learning from Polio SBC (misinformation, social data, and conflict)

Led by UNICEF HQ Polio SBC Section.
Over the past 30 years polio eradication action, including social and behaviour change, has received substantial investment and made demonstrable progress towards eradication. Though there has been remarkable progress, there have also been very significant challenges.
The event is focused on three key themes: The utilization of social data to inform and improve SBC programming; misinformation strategies and action; and SBC in conflict settings on which there is substantial polio learning; key polio eradication challenges remain; and, there is significant relevance to challenges faced by action across the full range of development priorities, including increasing routine immunization rates.
The purpose is to share and discuss learning from polio SBC that can be helpful to both next steps and challenges for polio SBC and the work and priorities of people engaged in other development issues.
The Direction of SBC in UNICEF

UNICEF will present its vision for Social and Behaviour Change over the next few years and articulate how this function contributes to closing the gap towards the SDGs and achieving results for children across sectors. The session will feature examples of best and promising practices from the field across regions, global goods available to anyone working on SBC, and innovative efforts underway including in the area of evidence and measurement.
Community Engagement in Humanitarian Action

The side event pushes the agenda for people-centered programming as well as for improved preparedness and increased systematic investments for community engagement systems in humanitarian action. The vision of the new Community Engagement in Humanitarian Action Toolkit (CHAT) will be shared, and the event will explain how it contributes to scaling up the mandate of Core Commitments for Children (CCCs) commitments of community engagement, SBC, and accountability.
Intersections of Faith and Norms

Religion is a universal human pursuit that influences many different cultural parameters, moral concepts, ideals, and human thinking and behaviour by providing answers to the meaning of human existence.[i] It is also an essential component of human culture because it provides a comprehensive and sympathetic understanding of human orientation.
Religious communities, including their leaders, institutions, and faith-based organizations, play a crucial role in promoting and enhancing children's well-being. The fundamental values enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), including a belief in the dignity of the child, are shared by all religions.
The significance of religious beliefs in all aspects of Middle Eastern society and culture cannot be overstated. These lands are the birthplace of three of the world's major religions and numerous smaller sects that continue to exist today.
The SBCC summit is an opportunity to examine in depth how religious entities and narratives can contribute to social and behavioural change in the MENA region, with a particular emphasis on social and gender norms.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought fresh attention to the ways that misinformation and disinformation influence vaccine demand. The role of social media algorithms in turbo-charging the spread of rumors and falsehoods is in the spotlight as never before. There have also been new opportunities to understand the real-world concerns of communities and to engage with them using digital tools. Just as trusted messengers play a key role in shaping offline community dialogue on vaccine safety and efficacy, online influencers are also well-placed to develop and deliver impactful information to vulnerable groups. This session will discuss examples from polio, routine immunization, and COVID-19 of how this dynamic field can be used to counter misinformation and build demand.
