Resilient Minds:
How Children in Benue State, Nigeria, Defy Crisis to Pursue Education
Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria, January 24, 2024- In the midst of the crisis in Benue State, Nigeria, a heartwarming story emerges from the Ortese Internally Displaced Persons Camp in Guma. Where over a thousand school-aged children, displaced by insecurity, have found solace and education in the government-established school within the camp.
On this International Day of Education, these children join the global celebrations with the theme "Learning for Lasting Peace," highlighting their unique journey and advocating for lasting peace. Despite the upheaval that disrupted their lives, these children are fortunate to continue their education.
Thirteen-year-old Happiness Gbor, who was forced to flee her village after a herdsmen attack, expresses her gratitude for the opportunity to continue her education. She cherishes the safe and supportive environment provided by the camp's school, where dedicated teachers ensure that classes are not missed. The school not only serves as a place of learning but also as a haven for the children to freely play and interact with their friends. "Our school is a safe haven, and the facilities provide ample space for us to play freely with our friends," Happiness shares enthusiastically.
Recognising the importance of creating secure environments for children, UNICEF has been actively working to restore normalcy to the lives of the children. Oliver Aondonengen, a teacher at the Ortese IDP Camp, highlights the safety measures in place, including security personnel and well-lit facilities.
"Since the inception of the Ortese IDP camp in 2020, we've maintained a peaceful learning atmosphere, thanks to the goodwill of development partners. Recently, UNICEF contributed 40 desks and a 'school in a box' kit, enhancing our learning environment.
UNICEF has also provided essential resources such as desks and school materials, as well as psychosocial support, to over 1000 pupils, addressing the challenges faced by displaced children.
However, significant uncertainties still hinder the seamless progression of education for these children. UNICEF continues to advocate for increased resource allocation, accelerated skills development, and universal access to education, ensuring that no child is left behind, even in crisis situations.
Juliet Chiluwe, Chief of Field Office, Enugu, UNICEF Nigeria, emphasises the crucial role of education in equipping children with the skills needed to rebuild their communities post-conflict. She stresses that when children are not in school, they face an increased risk of abuse, exploitation, and recruitment into armed groups.
This touching story demonstrates the perseverance and determination of the children in the Ortese IDP Camp, who refuse to let adversity define them. Education becomes the beacon of hope, providing individuals with stability and empowering them to shape a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
