UNICEF sends Myanmar journalists to Regional Children's Conference

Yangon, March 2005 - UNICEF is sponsoring four Myanmar journalists to attend the 7th East Asia and Pacific Ministerial Consultation on Children next week, during which 20 countries from the region will discuss and make commitments on a range of children’s issues, including disparity, child survival and adolescent development.

Young journalist Kyaw Hsu Mon of Flower News will be reporting on the regional Young People’s Forum preceding the Consultation, and will be accompanied by reporter Su Mon Aye of Kumudra, diplomatic editor Nwe Nwe Aye of the Myanmar Times and correspondent Ko Ko from Yomiuri Shimbun.

“Most Myanmar journalists don’t have chances to cover overseas events like this,” said correspondent Ko Ko, “so for us, it will be a good experience learning how to cover international news, and meeting journalists from around the region.”

“It will be good exposure for all of us, but especially for the young journalists.”

“I think this is a very good chance to meet other young journalists around the Mekong region, and learn how media work in other countries,” said young reporter Kyaw Hsu Mon, who, along with Su Mon Aye and 20 other Myanmar journalists, received UNICEF-sponsored training last year on international-standard reporting skills, child-focused reporting and media ethics.

“I’m especially interested in seeing the outcomes of the Consultation, and what decisions will be made for children in all of Southeast Asia and Myanmar,” said reporter Su Mon Aye.

The reporters will be filing stories from the Ministerial Consultation, and will conduct a debriefing on their visit upon their return.

“UNICEF is committed to helping Myanmar’s journalists bring children’s issues to light,” said UNICEF Representative Carroll Long.  “Sending these committed journalists to this event is just one more way UNICEF is striving to help Myanmar’s journalists develop child-friendly reporting skills.”
